When married parents divorce or separate, or when only one unmarried parent has custody of a child, the "non-custodial" parent (the parent with whom the child does not live) usually must pay a certain portion of his or her income as child support. Legal actions involving child support can range from obtaining a child support order to collection of unpaid child support.
